Finding time to think is probably on the back burner for most of us. Between text message alerts, emails, news updates, social media, ear buds, Bluetooth, etc., our time for peace and quiet could almost be considered extinct. We have become fixated on knowing and hearing everything the moment it happens. It pains us to think of missing out on anything. Peaceful thinking or meditating seem to be impossible but this is something we need to be doing, daily.
Why? Quiet thinking without distractions (kids, work, technology) is a way to discover ourselves. We can connect our brains and hearts and focus on what is working in our lives and what isn’t. This is the time to prioritize, think about goals and make plans on how to achieve those goals. You can analyze the relationships in your family and reflect on ways you can contribute more to the happiness of the home.
Finding time to think is a huge stress reliever. There are times I feel so weighed down by phone alerts coming from all directions of my life, kids needing my every second and I still need to clean my bathrooms, that I think my head will explode! That’s when I realize, it’s time to take a break. My time to think comes in the form of a bubble bath with candles and includes a prayerful conversation about how to be better or prayerfully consider struggles in my life. There’s also great benefits to finding spots outside to enjoy your quiet time. Fresh air and the sound of leaves blowing are therapeutic.
Quiet time is different from “me” time. “Me” time is any activity that you choose to do to take a break from the routine. This could include a nap, exercise, pedicure or shopping. Finding time to think is just that, thinking. It’s you and your thoughts. No distractions. This is your time for your soul to reconnect and become energized.
Designating a time to think, daily, will help you feel balanced and focused on all the responsibilities you are required to fulfill. It will also help you see those responsibilities with fresh eyes and renewed sense of purpose. Go ahead, put the phone on silent, leave the ear buds on the counter and take a walk, just for thinking. You might find it difficult to do something in total quiet (meaning nothing specific is begging for your attention) but you will get used to it and enjoy it.
