Bored of Exercise?
By a show of hands, who’s bored of exercise? Between yoga, Zumba, weights, marathons, power yoga, elliptical, stair stepper, hamstring curls, and hip hop dance class, CrossFit, etc. there are plenty of ways to stop the boredom. In fact, all the above listed are important and each for different reasons. Having an arsenal of workout options is vital for your health but more importantly, will keep you from getting bored of exercise.
We all have THAT friend. The one who runs 8 miles every day. EVERY DAY! She/he is like a robot. And never bored of exercise. They start and end those 8 miles with a smile on their face and looking forward to repeating it again tomorrow and for eternity. I admire those people, but most us do not fit in that category. We need some variation to keep us motivated and prevent boredom. Here’s a list of things, but not limited to, that you can incorporate into your exercise routine if you aren’t already doing so.
1. Weights
Weights will give you the biggest bang for your buck, so to speak. Cardio is great for eating up those calories but weights will burn more over a longer period. Weights help your body burn calories even when you finish working out. They help tone and define your body. They will only “bulk” you up if you are choosing to get to a power lifter level.
2. Cardio
This has huge benefits for your heart health, lung stamina, blood pressure, etc. For a time, I just focused on weight lifting, thinking I was getting my heart rate where it needed to be. Then one day I decided to jump on the treadmill for a sprint. Huge mistake! It was as if I had never worked out in my life. Cardio is crucial for our overall health. Combining cardio and weights will allow us to specifically give our bodies the attention they need.
3. Stretching
This is the time to treat your body. Slow it down. Take 5-10 minutes after each workout out and do light stretches to relax.
4. Break up the Routine
I hear a lot of people say, “I walk every morning but I’m not seeing results”. This is because our bodies can get in a rut if you do the same thing, repeatedly. The muscles work from memory and thus, don’t feel challenged, so they don’t respond. If this is the case for you, try muscle confusion. The idea is to throw something into your routine that your body isn’t expecting. For example, if you are a neighborhood walker, try jogging after every other light post. If you are a jogger, try sprinting a short distance. If you go to the gym, try a new cardio or weight machine or the mix up the order altogether. Your body will not know how to react and the more you confuse it, the better the results will be.
Take advantage of the variety of exercise programs out there so you don’t get bored of exercise! If you are bored of exercising, try something new. There is no right or wrong when it comes to a “normal” work-out. Do weights on Monday, cardio on Wednesday and basketball on Friday. Do whatever keeps you motivated! Don’t be afraid to mix things up. Your body will be so appreciative.
