Setting Goals with Your Spouse!
Communication in marriage is important. Because we have heard that and should know that, I want to add something extra on to that piece of advice. Communicating and setting goals with your spouse, is vital.
What are goals for and why do we need them? They keep us focused. Give us a reason to get up early on cold mornings and go to work. Goals help us keep our bank accounts healthy for that cruise we are looking forward too. Ultimately, goals maintain the pieces of our dreams glued together. Setting goals with your spouse, can and will keep your marriage together when both parties are committed to the goals.
Communicate
So often, husband and wife go about day to day making their separate to-do lists, that it is easy to forget the whole purpose of those to-do lists is a to reach a common result. However, the trouble creeps in when we fail to communicate those dreams consistently. Failed communication of those goals leads to a mindset of “this is what I am working for” rather than what “WE are working for.” Hence, the importance of setting goals with your spouse.
Create Specific Goals
Take the time to sit down and write very specific goals as a couple and a family. Also, make sure to talk about direct ways to accomplish these aims. Talk about financial, travel, marital expectations and any other of the plethora of goals you want to achieve together.
For example, my husband and I have a goal to be grandparents! Sounds silly since the kids are still at home, but I look so forward to being a grandma. We want to be financially stable to visit if they live far away. Physically healthy to help manage grandkids and supportive in any way to help our kids raise their families. Knowing this is a goal, we work on saving money and keeping ourselves in shape. I realize life isn’t something we can plan; I’ve learned that lesson the hard way. But we need to have a tentative plan and be willing to adapt when needed. The important part is at least having a plan.
The best thing I love about setting goals as a couple is they are “couple goals.” For my purpose, ideally, I need my husband by my side to make my “whole picture” grandma goals possible. He being part of that experience is vital to me. It makes us work harder at our marriage, so we reach that goal together. Thinking that someone else is depending on you to hold up your part of the deal for the long term, should affect decisions made shortly. Keeping our eyes on the goal should entice us to treat our spouses better, become selfless by putting their desires first and hopefully, be regularly engaged in working towards the goals you have made for each other.
