Fathers! The role of a father is vital. In today’s society of go, earn and earn some more, it can be easy for dads to feel they only contribute to the family when they provide for their family. While the role as a provider should NOT be diminished because your family’s physical well-being rests on the fact that you do go to work every day, I want to focus on your importance at home.
Fathers, when you are home, be home. Leave work at work. Focusing on your family and their needs will have a much better payoff in the future than adding 2 more hours of work at home in the evening. Your family needs your time and attention. Children and wives need to feel strong arms lovingly around them and sincere interest in their day.
We can’t emphasize enough that children need their fathers. In an article written in 1973, The Role of Fathers by A.Theodore Tuttle, he stated, “Fathers, draw close to your children. Learn to communicate. Also, learn to listen. This means giving a father’s most valuable commodity—time! Only good results occur when a father interviews his sons and daughters regularly. He can know their problems and their hopes. He can align himself with them as their unconditional friend.” To further express his point, he shared the following story.
Due to “The story told of an elementary teacher who had students write essays in hopes that it would motivate the fathers to attend a PTA meeting. The fathers came in $4,000 cars and $400 cars—bank president, laborer, clerk, salesman, meter reader, baker, etc.—every man with a definite estimate of himself in terms of money, skill, and looks. … The children’s essays were read at random.”
“‘I like my daddy, … he built my doll house, took me coasting, taught me to shoot, helps with my schoolwork, takes me to the park, gave me a pig to fatten and sell.’ Scores of the essays were reduced in essence to: ‘I like my daddy. He plays with me.’”
Hence “Not one child mentioned his family house, car, neighborhood, food, or clothing.”
“The fathers went into the meeting from many walks of life; they also came out in two classes: companions to their children or strangers to their children.”
Fathers, do not underestimate the role you play in your home.
Every member of your family needs your best attempt to fill that role. Hence, there is nothing extraordinary or expensive required, your children need your time. The demands on your time are constantly piling up and it can take some creative schedule shifting to make time at home more possible. It will also be worth the effort! Putting happiness at home first will only positively affect the other responsibilities in your busy life.
