The Dreaded List
Priority List! Does your day start with a checklist and end with a bigger list? Do you wonder how you are going to fit everything in a 24hr time? Or worse, how on earth did you forget such an important item today? This scenario pretty much sums up all of us at some point in our lives, or currently, for some, this IS life. Let’s talk about prioritizing and get your life to fit back into a 24hr day with a priority list.
Looking at Life as a Jar
For a moment, I want you to imagine a jar. Beside that jar are golf balls and marbles. Each sphere represents the demands in your life. The golf balls are your bigger responsibilities. Those would include but aren’t limited to, work, family, home, church, sleep, etc. The marbles represent the smaller things that take up our day, such as, social media, television time, phone time, extended family, etc. These are all so different for everyone, so be thinking how you would represent the way you spend your day and your to-do list. If you take all the small marbles and put them in first, the golf balls will not all fit. However, if you put the golf balls in first, and then the marbles, the marbles will work themselves around the golf balls, and it will all fit.
Priority List!
You need to prioritize your responsibilities and decide what you put in that jar first. Once you have taken care of your most valuable items, the rest will find a way to fit in your schedule. And if the small things don’t fit in your schedule, it doesn’t have as big of an impact as the big things in life.
The first step is to make a list of all your responsibilities and all your “extra” items or things you would like to happen. Writing it down will bring life to these areas in your life and help you focus on what matters to you.
Next, don’t try to fit 28 different balls into a small mason jar. Know your limits. Be realistic with your time. For some, focusing and accomplishing the golf ball responsibilities is all that fits.
Last, adjust when needed. Life is ever changing, and your list of priorities will change, so be flexible and don’t beat yourself up if you go to bed one night without your priority list completed. Analyze yourself regularly and make the needed changes so that you can be better at accomplishing your to-do list for tomorrow.
