Easily Offended
Easily Offended? Move On! It is time to avoid people who are pessimistic, ridicule you, or are easily offended. It’s time to stop being offended and move on! When it comes to working with co-workers or dealing with family members and friends, a variety of personalities surface. It is realistic to say that you get along with some better than others.
You should gravitate to people who inspire you, make you laugh or allow you to feel good about yourself. On the contrary, you should avoid the people who are pessimistic, ridicule you or are easily offended. Being an easily offended person is a terrible life to live. Since these people seem to think everyone is out to get them at any moment, they have a hard time seeing the views of others. If you think you might fall under this description, it’s worth doing some self-reflection and being less offended.
I love the quote, “So many of us make a great fuss over matters of small consequence. We are so easily offended. Happy is the man who can brush aside the offending remarks of another and go on his way.” (Gordon B. Hinckley)
Are there times people intentionally hurt you? Yes! In those moments it is justified to feel offense, but if you let the hurt consume you and rob your time, you give the offense more power than it needed. With that said, for the most part, people are genuinely kind, and in most cases, the intention was not to offend.
If this is an area you struggle with, here are some things you can do to combat the urge to be easily offended.
1. If you find you are easily offended, look at the other person’s perspective.
This option takes so much will power but is crucial. Sometimes you aren’t as articulate as you need to be during a conversation. Take a step back and examine the situation. Sometimes people don’t do a good job of explaining themselves very well. They aren’t trying to offend.
2. What is your current state of mind?
Have you been getting enough sleep? Are you hungry? Is there a struggle in your life that you are dealing with at the moment? All of these factor into how you receive a comment. Ask yourself, “would that have offended me on a good day?”
3. Accept that some people are just offensive!
I have a friend that has the best intentions in the world, but not the best way of communicating those plans. If you don’t know this person very well, you could be easily, and justifiably be offended. However, knowing their real heart, I’m able to let things said roll off my back.
4. If you find you are often offended, choose a better reaction!
We are in full control of our reactions. It’s simple. We can opt to be offended, or we can offer a positive response.
5. When you do find yourself in a legitimate situation of being hurt, refocus your thoughts.
Allow yourself a few moments of frustration and then move on. Don’t be the one who is often offended!
Our lives are so so naturally busy and hit with struggles you can’t foresee, that you don’t have any time to waste on being offended. Most of the time you get offended, the offender isn’t even aware they made you upset. How much time have you wasted, sleepless nights have you spent, upset by someone’s unintentional offense? Therefore, focus on the happy things in life and lifting others up. It will change the way you interact with others and you will sleep so much better.
