Traditions
Now is the time to be thinking of family traditions for the coming year. One of our favorite movies at Christmas time is “Christmas Vacation”. The main character, Clark Griswold, is a hopeless romantic when it comes to family time. He wants so badly for extended family to be together over the holidays and celebrate traditions as one big, happy family. Of course, though, things never go to plan. Watching this movie is one of our favorite things to do over Christmas because it has become a tradition for us. Traditions are vital to us as human beings. They give us roots. I recently came across a quote by someone named Susan Lieberman, she said, “Family traditions counter alienation and confusion. They help us define who we are; they provide something steady, reliable and safe in a confusing world”.
Family traditions don’t have to happen just at the holidays and in our home, they have evolved over the years. There have certainly been more added as the kids have come along and as they get older. I want their childhood to be filled with the smells, sounds, and feelings of traditions. Have you ever talked to someone who didn’t smile while talking about their family traditions? They are so impactful!
TRADITIONS
I made a list of traditions we do in our home and ones I’ve heard of other families doing. The best part is that they can be as inexpensive as you need them to be. In our family’s case, the free ones end up being the ones our kids enjoy most. Traditions are so simple to create and maintain but will have lasting effects on those loved ones that surround you.
