Trouble Saying No
Do you have trouble saying no? The first step to realizing is that it’s okay to say “No”! An important part of a balanced YOU is knowing your limits. It’s also important to remember that other people do NOT know your limits! All of our time to spent juggling our responsibilities that require a great deal of our attention. We have family, work, school, kid activities and other obligations. While it is a beautiful thing to challenge ourselves when the opportunity arises, we need to be able to recognize that sometimes it’s okay to say “no”!
The best way to discover your limit is to sit down and make a list of everything you are responsible for. If you find that your list isn’t overwhelming to you, that’s great! If, however, you do feel that you can’t even accomplish your list right now, much less anything extra, you have passed your limit.
Consider taking something off your list by either erasing it all together, if possible or delegate to someone else. Learning the art of delegation is a beautiful gift!
But what do you do when the boss asks you to take on more work? Or a friend needs you to chauffeur their kids around and you know there’s no way to make that possible? Apparently, when it comes to work or friendship, you want to ensure and think it through thoroughly but if you keep coming to the same conclusion, “it’s just too much right now”, here are some ways to say “NO” when you have trouble saying no.
- I’d love to, but can’t right now.
- I can’t help with this situation, but is there another way I can help?
- Le me get someone who can help you!
- I could, but I need some help with (………) to make it possible.
- Is this something I could help you with at a future date?
- I’d be happy to help you think this through, but I can’t take on anymore myself.
- No, but thanks for asking.
- I can help with part of the solution but not all of it.
- I can at least get it started, but that’s all.
- Here’s what I can do…..
It is not easy telling someone “NO”, especially when you have trouble saying no. Even in a nice, roundabout way. What we don’t realize though is that when we take on more than we can physically and mentally handle, we are not able to do our best at the task. It can also harbor resentment. Being honest with those around us about our limitations is part of building an environment for ourselves that will nourish our growth. Always be open to opportunities that will challenge and inspire you, but don’t hesitate to say “no” if it’s honestly not something you can handle right now. Seasons change and so do our loads.
