First Impressions; How to Make the Most of Meeting Someone New
First Impressions are Important! This is nothing new. When we are selling a house, we want our exterior to have a winning first impression so that buyers want to walk inside the house. If the exterior is a wreck, people will keep on driving and not care to see the inside. We also need to think about how we present ourselves to others for the first time! Do we have an inviting first impression or do we encourage others to stay far away?
We’ve all had experiences of great first impressions as well as first impressions we wish we could erase from time. Making the first impression is a simple task but it does need to be practiced! Here are some Do’s and Don’ts when making that first impression.
Do’s for a Great First Impression
- Make eye contact—this is a great way to let the person know you acknowledge them
- Another is to offer a firm, full handshake—not a wet noodle shake with just your fingers
- Sincere Smile—displays confidence
- Dress Appropriately—if this is the first impression for an interview, this is vital
- Be Confident, even if you are scared to death
Don’t for a Bad First Impression
- Don’t start complaining
- In addition, don’t just talk about yourself
- Avoid acting irritated
- Do your best to not get distracted
Whether you are meeting someone as a friend, making a business deal or going for an interview, a first impression is crucial. Hence, coming across as confident and genuine will have the lasting impression you are going for. Furthermore, go ahead and practice your smile in the mirror, making eye contact with strangers and find some hands to shake to improve your first impression skills!
