Sofa Sectional Purchase
A sectional will NOT fit in every family room. I’m sorry. These may be very hard words for some people to hear but they need to be said. In fact, sometimes the “sets” of furniture we see in on display in a store, will not fit either. Before you spend some good money and purchase new furniture, please measure your room and each individual piece you are thinking about purchasing.
Why can’t I just buy the Sofa Sectional on display?
Because a designer focuses on emotion, all the displays in a store are lovely! They are cozy and sit perfectly on the rug displayed with them. Each piece is accessible and there’s plenty of room to spread your legs out. You then make the purchase and realize it doesn’t have the same effect in your family room. Why? Because the display didn’t consider YOUR room. In your own room, you must work around closet doors, entry doors, fireplaces, walkways, windows and access to other parts of your house.
Not every room can fit a sofa sectional!
Honestly, there are only a few select room layouts that can have a sectional. Sectionals are great for comfort but are not always functional for your family room. They can really cut off a room’s access if not properly placed. Another mistake I see happening often is that the sectional is purchased, brought home and then looks gigantic in the home. Much bigger than it did in the store. So what went wrong? In the store, you were looking at it without realistic dimensions. They are set up in these massive stores with grand ceilings and space that never ends. In this setting, a sectional looks small. Consider this before you pay to have the display sectional super-sized.
So how do I make sure my sofa sectional will fit?
Also, really consider what type of seating you need in your family room. Do you want minimal seating or ample seating? Do you have room for a couch and a loveseat or will just a couch realistically fit? There are 100’s of sized chairs, which size will work best for your fireplace or French doors? Once you decide the layout, get out your measuring tape and tape! Measure the size couch you want in the room and mark it with tape. Do the same for other pieces you want in the room, including coffee and side tables.
Taking the time to plan and measure will save you so much money in the end. Don’t feel pressured into buying a “set” from the store. If you know you can only fit a couch, don’t waste your money on the loveseat. By following these tips, you will avoid buyer’s remorse by doing your homework ahead of time!
