Decorating a Bookshelf in a Few Simple Steps
Decorating a Bookshelf is easy, right? You fill it with books, mail, loose papers, folders and plastic binders. A bookshelf that matches that description is not necessarily “decorated,” just used. It’s fine to put these items on a bookshelf, but not if that shelf is in your family room. Therefore, if you want to decorate your bookshelf or any type of shelving in the main living areas of your home, here’s how to do it!
Getting Started
First of all, remove all of the items from the shelf. If what you removed includes mail, paperwork or any paper storage, find a different place for these items altogether. A bookshelf in a family room is meant to display things of beauty, endearment, and items that represent you. While the latest water bill is a far cry from any of those descriptions.
Next, choose items that mean something to you. Photos, interesting books, pottery, kids artwork, things collected from your travels, unique statement pieces, etc. These are conversational pieces that will make your home inviting. If space is limited and this area of your home is the best spot for mail or other less alluring pieces, hide and contain them in baskets or boxes. Because no one should be victim to a family room or kitchen that resembles a post office.
Once you choose which items you want on display, play around with the arrangement. Be creative. Stack books or leave them up right. Also, use photos as book ends or any unique item as a makeshift bookend. Most importantly, be careful of overcrowding. Sometimes it’s okay, and other times it’s not. It depends on what items you are grouping together. Also, try layering objects. Use a smaller décor piece in front of a plaque or stack of books.
Finally, every bookshelf would benefit from some green. Splurge on some nice artificial plants to use on your shelf. Not in abundance, but as a touch of life on the shelf. Hence, decorating a bookshelf in the main living space is less about book storage and more about representing you.
