Schedule your Summer! Summer is one of my favorite seasons! The days are warm and lazy. It means flip flops, sunglasses, and popsicles. All the things that put a smile on most of our faces. But let’s be honest, it also means that school is out. When school is out, siblings are together. If siblings are together, there is fighting. Having siblings together means the house ends up looking like a riot just took place in every room. Even though I homeschool, I also feel a sense of loss of a schedule in summer and as a result, suffer the wrath of my kids with too much free time. Summer needs to represent warm and lazy, so let’s find ways to minimize the fights and the messes and get our lazy on!
Bring on Summer
First, it’s crucial that there is a schedule established, even if it has nothing but lazy activities scheduled. A schedule keeps the chaos down and kids in check with what is expected. Let them sleep in later than a normal school day, but try and set up a goal of when all need to be up and going. I’m writing this from the perspective of kids ages 9 and under. I, in no way, have a clue about teenager’s sleep schedules!
Next, the house is not a party house that they can destroy and then leave it to someone else to clean. Make a chore list. This chore list can be more vigorous than when school is in because they have more time. Based on your family, decide when the chores are expected to be done. Regardless, whenever a mess is made, they will be the ones to clean it up.
Another crucial part of keeping your sanity is setting aside some quiet time. This is the time they can read, do some practice school, play quietly, draw, etc. The key is that this is the time each kid has to themselves, away from siblings.
Have Fun
Finally, for everyone’s sake, schedule some fun! It doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun. Again, I’m writing from the perspective of a mother with young kids. Take advantage of your library programs, local pools, outdoor chalk, water hose, eating ice cream outside, bike riding, parks, fishing, etc. The key is getting the kids outside! It’s great for their health, the best way to exert energy, and the only way to truly ensure that your home won’t be destroyed.
Maximize your summer by making a schedule and family goals. Summer is magical so go ahead and schedule some fun, relaxation, and memories. Just make sure everyone understands their responsibilities to pitch in and make that happen.
