Managing Money!
Managing money is an important life skill. How is your money managed? The answer will vary, and there are many great ways to handle your money depending on your situation. However you do it, managing your money, is the critical part.
I read an article stating that close to half of Americans spend more than their monthly income. It doesn’t take a mathematician to recognize that expenses accrued after a depleted paycheck then goes on a credit card. This, in turn, creates a debt spiral with interest and the inability to pay off the credit card. As a result, stress levels are maximized putting a strain on our work environment and your families.
Taking Control
If you earn money, you need to find a way to manage it. Whether you fall under the criteria of spending too much or not, we all benefit from scrutinizing how we handle our money. Here are some ways to start managing money today!
- Make a list of all your needed expenses (home, food, car, education loans, medical, etc.) and deduct those from your paycheck. Look at how much money all of that requires. Writing it down or putting it in a spreadsheet can be an eye-opening experience.
- Now list all your non-necessary expenses (pedicures, 16th purse, the 3rd pair of golf shoes, eating out) and see which of these items you could scale back.
- Set a goal to put a set amount of money into savings each month. Even if it’s a small amount, you will rest easy knowing that you are putting something into savings.
- Reward yourself! Once you set a money goal and reach it; reward yourself some way. Treat yourself to a pedicure, golf game or eating out. Just make sure you don’t blow all the money you worked hard to save on this reward. Then set a new goal and work towards it, etc.
Fixing our financial stress is all about changing the way we think. Focus on needs versus wants. We should train our brains to want more in savings than another designer handbag. You never know when your savings will need to cover a water heater and two new air conditioning units within a month of each other. Don’t let overspending control you anymore. Take the necessary steps today to get control and start managing money.
