Be Nice!
Be Nice! We have heard that repeatedly as kids and share this phrase with our own kids. Although I know to “be nice”, when I read the following quote, the idea of being nice took on a new meaning. “When you meet someone, treat them as if they were in serious trouble, and you will be right more than half the time.” (Henry B. Eyring, The Reward of Enduring Well)
Seeing Others Differently
It is easy and natural to get caught up in our own life struggles. It is easy to focus on our trials and often it’s all we can focus on during the day. How often do we wish people knew about our problems so that they would be kinder to us? But how often do we ourselves think of how other’s may be struggling? Are you aware of your employee’s recent bought with severe anxiety? That might explain the sub-par work performance. Could the person in the office next to you be dealing with current health issues for themselves or a spouse? Is your neighbor faced with foreclosure but you’re not sure why they have been so difficult to deal with lately? Be nice!
We All Struggle at Some Point
The fact is most of us don’t go around shouting our ailments to the world. We go about our day dealing with life the best way we know how. Sometimes we are successful at juggling everything, but sometimes the weight of all we are juggling can crash down. As a result, areas of our life are negatively affected, with work and home life being the primary victims of the crash.
Given the fact we are human, it is safe to assume we have all experienced trials. We all know the personal effects of anxiety and depression. Career concerns have been a worry at one point for all of us. We’ve all dealt with crushing relationship blows and health scares, whether of our own or with those we love. Let’s try harder to be kinder. If we assume the cranky clerk at the store is dealing with a cancer scare, we might be more patient with their rudeness. If we are more patient with a co-worker that seems distant, our result may be an answer to prayers since their marriage is failing.
Having a crystal ball would be handy and allow us to see precisely how we can assist those who need our help but we don’t have those. However, if we do live by the thought, that everyone we meet is struggling and needs some extra kindness, it will allow us to help others in countless ways. It takes no money to be nice. Join me on my daily goal to be kinder to the people I meet.
