The difference paint can make! I know that you have heard that paint is the cheapest and fastest way to transform a room, right? I can testify to that! As we have gone room by room in our home, changing it, my first step is figuring out if the paint is working. Paint can either deaden a room or perfect a space. It all depends on the room and the color.
Lighter Means the Feeling of Bigger
I want to start by sharing my son’s room. When we moved in, it was painted the same colors as the university I attended Brigham Young University. The people we bought from also attended that school, so their son picked the colors. My blood runs blue with Cougar pride so I thought it was the one room I wouldn’t be repainting.
However, my son’s room is tiny. It’s minuscule. The paint colors were two walls gray, two walls navy. When you entered his room, you felt like you were going into a cave and the longer you stayed in there, the more the walls closed in on you. It was a humbling day to realize the BYU navy wasn’t going to work. In a room this small, I needed light, I knew I needed white!
Don’t Overthink
This thought process didn’t happen over months or even weeks. I woke up one morning, had these thoughts, and was browsing Sherwin Williams within an hour. I have no patience with decorating. The room was primed and had two coats on it by the afternoon. A friend recently told me it took her three weeks to paint a half bathroom. It’s these conversations that I realize I’m nuts and my husband is very patient. As I put on the primer, I felt the room open up and brighten up. It was less cave-like and more inviting. Once the last coat was on, you could see the room transformation.
Difference Paint Can Make
If you have a room that isn’t working for you aesthetically, take a look at your paint choice. Be careful putting dark in small rooms because it will shrink the room. Examine how your paint works with your furniture. Yellow based paint colors will clash with most wood tones. Many people make the mistake of using a yellow or tan based color in their kitchen against their wood cabinets. The color of your furniture plays a big role in your paint choice. Before you make the costly decision to change everything in the room, try the cheapest fix and consider a new paint color. I’m always happy to help you find out the difference paint can make!
