Honesty! Do you ever think about how important honesty is to you? Have you noticed yourself taking mental notes about those you work with or friends you have and their ability, to be honest? Are you honest? It’s easy to see honesty strengths or flaws in others but how often do we gauge our own honesty? I love the quote by Albert Einstein, he states, “Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters, cannot be trusted with important matters.” Having personally known both spectrums of people, those who are honest and those who aren’t, it’s important we strive every day, to be honest.
Honesty; Keep Your Word
In a recent article, I read by Neil A. Anderson, he reminds us that, “There are times we honor commitments simply because we have agreed to honor them. You will have situations in your life when you will be tempted to disregard an agreement you have made. You will initially make the agreement because of something you wish to receive in return. Later, because of a change in circumstances, you will no longer want to honor the terms of the agreement. Learn now that when you give your word when you make a promise when you sign your name, your personal honesty and integrity bind you to your word, your commitment, your agreement.”
Respect
If you’ve had experiences whether at work or among your circle of friends with one who is dishonest, you know the consequences that stem from that behavior. It is hard to have a conversation with that individual for fear of false information or possibly things you share being misrepresented. On the flip side, an honest person makes others feel comfort and peace. An honest person is more respected. Even criticism taken from an honest person is better received.
Integrity
In closing, a college professor from Brigham Young University, Karl G. Maeser, once stated, “My young friends, I have been asked what I mean by word of honor. I will tell you. Place me behind prison walls—walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground—there is a possibility that in some way or another I may be able to escape. But stand me on that floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I’d die first!”
