Positive People
Positive People; Surround yourself with them! As a parent, I’m constantly encouraging my kids to surround themselves with people who will make them better. Friends who encourage and inspire. I warn them to steer clear of those who tear down or belittle. I know most parents share the same advice with their kids but how many of us consider it for ourselves? As adults, it’s just as important we surround ourselves with people who will build us up.
Positive Vs. Negative
Positive people have a way of making the most mundane task seem bearable and sometimes even enjoyable! As a former teacher, I had a co-worker with the gift of being positive. She was always extending compliments and a pat on the back when we needed it. When she would get frustrated, it was always done with a quick complaint, some laughter and immediately followed by a positive comment. She acknowledged that frustration was real, but she didn’t give that frustration a lot of attention. It was a pleasure to work with her.
On the opposite spectrum, I have also worked with people who are downers. It is a challenge to be in a working environment with these types of people. Surrounding ourselves with negative people feels like being exposed to poison all the time. It can negatively affect our perspective and is contagious. We can quickly feel their influence in our lives.
Negative Influence
An author and speaker, Gordon B. Hinckley, shared a story warning us to be cautious of who we surround ourselves with. He said, “There was an Indian boy who climbed a high mountain. It was cold up there. At his feet was a snake, a rattlesnake. The snake was cold and pleaded with the young man to pick it up and take it down where it was warmer.
The Indian boy listened to the enticings of the serpent. He gave in. Gathered the snake up into his arms and covered it with his shirt. He carried it down the mountain to where it was warm. He gently put it on the grass. When the snake was warm it raised its head and struck the boy with its poisonous fangs.
The boy cursed at the snake for striking him as an answer to his kindness. The snake replied, “You knew what I was when you picked me up.”
Finally, I want to encourage all of us to seek better friends and associates. It can be tricky in the workplace since we have very little control over who we work with. It will just take a greater effort on our part to seek out the positive people. In some cases, it may mean that you will need to be the positive influence to turn the work environment around. We can all work on being that positive influence among our friends, at work and more importantly, in our homes.
