I love a good collage wall! They can be just the decorating ticket a bare wall needs, and when done right, they are simply lovely. Collage walls can and should be a representation of who we are. When visitors come to our homes, a collage wall can sum up our families with just a glance.
Do you have the perfect wall for a collage but aren’t sure how to get it going? Here’s the great news! Collage walls don’t have set rules but here are some tips to get you started!
Decide how much of the wall you want to use
Once you figure out if you want the whole wall or just a portion of it used for a collage, mark off your desired area with some painter’s tape. Measure it and then mark your floor with the same dimensions.
Don’t force a theme
It’s okay if you want a theme, but it’s not necessary. Some of the best collage walls I’ve seen are random, but interesting items. Each piece meant something to the owner, and that’s why it worked.
Use a Variety of Sizes and Shapes
Find items that are big, small, skinny, chunky, dimensional, straight lined, round, flat, etc. These keep your wall interesting
Play Around with the Layout
With your floor taped off, lay out your items. Start with the largest piece first and work outwards from there. This process is the tedious but fun part! Keep like shapes and sizes away from each other. Move everything around until you find “THE” look you are going for on the wall. If you’re a cautious person, then I suggest that once you find your layout, trace the items with wax paper and tape the paper to the wall. But if you’re like me, I just start nailing! Warning: This method can drive the perfectionist crazy.
Have Fun!
No one is going to be measuring the distance between each item so don’t stress yourself out about making it perfect. A collage wall is meant to be perfectly imperfect. Make it unique and special to you. I have a collage wall that is just family photos of how our family has grown the last 12 years. I guess its picture overload for most, but for me, it’s wonderful! Have fun with your collage wall, and if you need help, I can help you out!
