Controlling Anger! “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel to which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” (Mark Twain)
Controlling Anger; Something To Think About
I recently attended an event with my kids about cold-blooded animals. We found our seats in the front ready to learn about reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and fish. The presenter came prepared with a tarantula, Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, lizard and more snakes than I am comfortable in the room. The kids were in heaven.
To begin with, we learned about habitats, appetites, and ways these animals help our economy and environment. One topic of interest was safety around the animals, especially snakes. The central question was how to avoid a snake bite. I waited anxiously for the answer. The presenter said never to chase a snake or try and grab it. Avoiding those actions would keep us safe. I knew that pursuing or catching a snake was never on my to-do list, so it eased my fear of attack. However, the presenter then explained something that I guess I had never considered before. He asked the kids, “if an animal ever does bite you, why do you think that is?” After multiple responses, the conclusion was that the animal probably felt threatened and was just protecting itself, in most cases.
Next, he asked the kids, “which animal does attack just to be mean?” Of course, there were a plethora of responses, but most attack situations could be traced back to humans being in the animals territory. He told us that only humans are capable of genuinely unprovoked attacks.
Controlling Anger; Affects in our Society
That statement had me thinking about how much damage anger does to our society. Violence is the reason our jails are full. Crime in our community as a result of anger is growing. In fact, our very homes have suffered the consequences of rage at one time or another. This emotion is so crippling that it can skew our judgment and perception. If not handled properly, our anger can control every aspect of our lives.
Controlling Anger; How does it Affect Your Life?
In closing, I want to challenge the way we respond to undesirable situations. Consider how you react to work, home or other stressful environments. Do you add to the stress of your anger, or do you look for a solution? There is no way to be perfect in this area of life, but there is always room for improvement. One of my favorite speakers once said, “I plead with you to control your tempers, to put a smile upon your faces, which will erase anger; speak out with words of love and peace, appreciation, and respect. If you do this, your lives will be without regret. Preserve your marriages and family relationships. You will be much happier. You will feel a sense of peace that will be wonderful.” (Gordon B. Hinckley, Slow To Anger, 2007)
