Decorating a Mantle
Decorating a mantle creates a statement. I really enjoy the detail part of decorating, the accessorizing! The accessories are what brings a room together. These finishing touches are the icing on the cake and are the parts of your room that can have the most dramatic statement. One of my favorite areas to accessorize is the mantle!
When I think of decorating a mantle I think of adjectives like cozy, warm, inviting, storytelling, etc. For most family rooms, the mantle is the focal point. It sits up high and proud, ready to showcase décor that is important to you. I realize that not every room has the option of putting a television anywhere but the mantle but if you do have the option, consider keeping the T.V. off the mantle. Below are some tips when it comes to decorating your mantle.
Television or No Television
That seems to be the big debate. I can appreciate those of you who have your television above your mantle. I completely see the benefit. At one point in my life, I couldn’t wait to get my T.V. above my mantle because this meant not having to worry about my kids pulling it down on themselves from a T.V. stand. I quickly realized though that having the T.V. up there made it my focal point which wasn’t what I wanted. After some convincing, I asked Colby to move it to an awkwardly deep built-in shelf we had next to the fireplace. Now my mantle was free to express what is important to me.
Choose One Main Item
To begin, pick a large item. This can be a mirror, painting, family picture, an abstract piece, or whatever! Play around with its placement. Before you hang it on a nail in the wall, see that it looks like sitting directly on the mantle. Next, don’t just center it and be done. Try it centered, off centered, completely on a far side, etc.
Layer
Once you have found your main item, gather a few smaller pieces of varying sizes, textures and shapes to compliment your big piece. Make sure you take the time needed to mix and match different combinations of the items. Don’t be afraid to mess up! Some of my favorite mantle accessories are small plants, books, candles, clocks, vases, really anything!
When it comes to decorating a mantle, you are free to go as complex or as simple as you like. I do recommend keeping it interesting. If you decide for simple, make that simple item a WOW piece. A 3D mirror or a beautiful piece of artwork would be simple but impactful. Most importantly, have fun, be creative and call me if you need some help!
