Decorating Mistake!
Have you made a decorating mistake? Gosh, it is hard to admit when you make a decorating mistake. Especially, during the exact moment when it felt so right! My journey in creating a beautiful home for myself, hopefully also to inspire others, has been sucker punched by plenty of decorating mistakes. In my defense, though, most have come during pregnancy, and I do suffer from pregnancy brain.
Realizing and admitting you made a decorating mistake, even if it involves a big purchase, is all part of the process. Own your decorating mistake and don’t let it deter you from creating the home environment you are working so hard to obtain!
Ugly Green Couch
Let’s talk about one major decorating mistake, during my 3rd pregnancy. I was trying to figure out my family room, layout. It was a tiny family room and my current furniture was struggling to fit. No matter how I positioned the couch, two chairs, coffee table; nothing seemed to flow. In my 1st trimester splendor, I decided that ditching the two chairs and adding another sofa would be the solution. Colby said yes, because that’s what he does, especially when I’m with child, so the hunt began.
I found myself in a furniture consignment store and within an instant, saw the heavenly light shining on one couch. It was the one. Never mind the fact it was green, modern, frame, and attached back pillows (I hate those), I knew it was the one. In hindsight, it was the antithesis of my decorating self, but I’m convinced that pregnancy had me convinced it was the one. I bargained them down and took that (ugly) baby home with me.
Buyer’s Remorse
Then reality hit. Buyer’s remorse hit. Morning sickness hit. I became plagued by that couch because not only did my kitchen make me sick, but so did it. “What was I thinking?” I couldn’t admit to Colby it was a mistake. My pride was worth more than that, so I suffered through it.
When we moved into our current house, I tried to make it work but had to admit it wasn’t going to work, and it was time to fix it. I sold it and put a couch my grandmother gave us, that we had reupholstered, in its place. The new sofa’s style fits the room better, and I find that I can now be in that room now rather than cringe as I run by it.
Admitting we have messed up in our home décor can be a painful and sometimes expensive realization. Just know that it’s part of the process.
Everyone has messed up whether they like to admit it or not. Don’t let those mistakes discourage you or put in a decorating freeze. Keep working hard and learning from those mistakes. They help us figure out what we don’t want so that we end up with exactly what we DO want.Get your dream home by making mistakes!
