Decorating Small Spaces
Decorating small spaces can be challenging. It can be easy to get an over cluttered look. We have a butler’s pantry that needed a major refreshing. We wanted it to match the kitchen, so Colby added a shelf using some wood we had in the garage and put up the same backsplash from the kitchen. This spot in my home has had a variety of looks but I finally found what works.
Here are some tips on how to decorate a small space.
Pick Like Items
Filling a shelf with a variety of different items will make the space feel a bit chaotic. For my butler’s pantry, I went with dishes. I used dishes that normally stay hidden in my cabinets but are beautiful. I can finally display them.
Use a Consistent Color Pallet
In a small space, you must be careful not to make it appear smaller. Keeping a main color pallet will prevent that from happening. I chose white to keep it simple and clean looking.
Not Every Space has to be Filled
Our eyes enjoy having a place to “rest” from looking at things. In my many attempts to figure out this space, I kept trying to force just as many items on the bottom as the top shelf. It never looked right. The bottom has shadows from the shelf, so anything I placed on the counter, under the shelf, appeared dark and dreary. It’s ok to have an empty space.
Include Items That are Special to You
Every part of your house should make you smile! Seeing words like JOY or BE AMAZING, are good reminders for me to see. I encourage you to tuck little notes around your home that will elicit a happy feeling! I also love to cook, so going with a dishes theme, is unique to me.
Decorating small spaces is sometimes more time consuming than a room. It’s because we tend to pack too much variety, color, and random items just to “fill” space. Take your time, try different things and don’t be afraid to mess up. I’m always happy to help you skip that process and do it for you!
