Dining Room – Down Home Friday – BALANCE HOME BLOG
One of the biggest selling features in our current home was the “morning room.” This room is connected to the kitchen and is also known as the breakfast nook, but it is larger than a “nook.” I was thrilled to see this as my home at the time had a tiny eat-in kitchen area, and you had to side step your way around the area. The morning room in our current house was just the right size and has a perfect view of our backyard. Decorating a dining room is something I enjoy because the dining table is where families bond.
Anytime you decorate any room; you need to consider the location of the area in the house, as well as, what views, if any, are through the windows. This thought process allows for optimal functionality and best use of space. For this particular dining room, the best part was three walls of windows that overlook the woods.
BEFORE
The current paint was green. When you looked into the room, you saw green, on green, trees, more green, grass and more green. I like green, but this was a bit much. Our dining set was also green. My husband refinished it for me to fit in with our last home décor, and I was not about to tell him the table wouldn’t work. Let’s not forget, the floors are brown. With so much green and brown on the floors, I was living and eating in a treehouse.
During
The first thing to change was the paint. I wanted a neutral so that the eye would focus on the beautiful view we have and not get distracted by color on the wall. It’s an off white and makes the room feel open and airy. The 2nd thing to change was to put in an actual dining room light fixture. The original installation was a ceiling fan. An oversized, white, gold ceiling fan. The husband loved it and all the air it circulated while we ate dinner. I gave him that enjoyment for a month and then it was gone. I replaced it with an antiqued bronze, drum shade style light. Much better!
After
Since each room in my house needs something unique, I envisioned something different to go above the windows. For some reason, an old log saw kept coming to mind. Then the thought kept coming, “where on earth would I find that?” Luckily, I’m always running into antique/flea market stores, just for fun. As if a light was hovering over one corner of the shop I was in one day; I found an old log saw. Then another one! It was meant to be. By trial and error, we attached them to the walls. The last thing I needed was a sign to remind us why we invest the time to have family dinners every night. I wrote the phrase, “Tomorrow Matters” on a sign my husband made, and the room was complete.
Our family loves to be outside. Between the saws and the view, we can enjoy the “outdoor” vibe, with some elegance while we eat. Making each room mean something to you will help you find it’s purpose and you will get the most fun use out of your home. While decorating a dining room or any eating area in your home, keep your family in mind. Make it inviting for those who eat around your table.
