Here’s my crazy, functional space…Functional Fun Creative Room! It’s the opposite of the rest of my house. My house is intended to have a soothing, calming feel. This room is our classroom so its intentions are to energize and inspire creativity. I think of it as my controlled chaos room. This room had to be functional and fun!
Sometimes we have rooms that require us to think outside the box and past our comfort. As much as I wanted a classroom that mirrored the rest of my house, I also needed to accept the fact that kid books, workbooks, and crayons are colorful, so this room would need to go beyond “soothing”. I’m also very fortunate that we can have a designated classroom for our homeschooling. It gives me the opportunity to appease my former teacher roots and create a “classroom”.
My focus on this room was to make items quickly accessible, organized and done in a creative way. I lined the wall with pages from an old book. It’s from a book I got for $.25 at the library. Reading is a loved activity for my kid’s so I thought it only fitting to make this room’s feature be a wall of pages.
Their desk is close to the shelves so that books for the next lesson can be grabbed quickly. I’ve had to figure ways to diminish distractions and I realized that making the distance from the workspace to shelf space, gave way to too much temptation for distraction. A 10-second walk to get something can turn into 20 minutes later I’m trying to figure out where the oldest wondered off too.
On the opposite wall, not pictured, I have a white board we do our day to day work on. I also needed a spot to keep weekly assignments, that won’t be erased by the toddler. I took off the doors from a corner cabinet I have in another room and lined them with white paper. The glass makes for a perfect writing surface for dry erase markers. It’s eclectic but functions perfectly! It’s where we keep information the kids need to memorize and it’s handy to have it constantly displayed.
Our classroom is tailored to us. It’s also an ever-evolving room that adapts as we need it too. My kids enjoy having a playful room to learn in. Not every moment is filled with glee-full, cooperative learning, as I would hope, but we sure enjoy the room we are working in!
