Habits! Confucius once stated, “The nature of men is always the same. It is their habits that separate them.” Everyone has habits. Some are desirable and others we’ve tried numerous times to stop. The good ones range from daily self-care, serving others, continuing our education, etc. The not so great ones include, but are not limited to, gluttony, negativity and harmful addictions for our body and minds. The list of both is endless! It is vital that we realize our habits, good or bad so that we can focus on making our best selves.
Applaud the Good Habits
Delbert L. Stapley wrote an article about this very topic. He titled it; Good Habits Develop Good Character. In it, he stated, “Good habits are not acquired simply by making good resolves, though the thought must precede the action. Develop good habits in the workshop of our daily lives. You don’t build character in the great moments of test and trial. That is only when it is displayed. The habits that direct our lives and form our character, fashioned in the often uneventful, commonplace routine of life. They are acquired by practice.”
Take a moment today and think about your habits. Applaud yourself for the good habits and make a resolution to keep them up. But also, be brave enough to think of the habits you aren’t proud of today. Consider how they are tearing you down. How are they negatively affecting you? Depending on the depth of the pattern, will depend on how to stop the habit. They may be ones that you can stop on your own or may need professional help. Love yourself enough to get the necessary help to overcome the harmful habits.
Every day gives us an opportunity for growth. There will be moments of struggle, especially when trying to break a deep-rooted habit, but there is always hope for improvement! Our habits create who we are. They define us. Let’s put our energy into those habits that make us better. “We sow our thoughts, and we reap our actions; sow our actions, and we reap our habits; we sow our habits, and we reap our characters; we sow our characters, and we reap our destiny.” (C. A. Hall, The Home Book of Quotations, New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1935, p. 845.)
