Making Your House Feel Balanced
I recently wrote a post about color balance in a room. Now, I want to talk about overall balance in a room. This concept can be a tricky one to master but has everything to do with the “feel” of your room. Everything from windows, fireplace, shelves, T.V., tables, chairs, couches, artwork, and lamps must be considered when balancing a room. Learn how making your house feel balanced can increase the balance & harmony in your life.
Think of Your Room on a Scale
As you stand in a room in your house, think of it on a balance scale. Would the scale stay even or would it tilt to one side? A common mistake is to throw most of our furniture on one side of the room, most likely centered around a T.V. When this happens, we throw our room off balance making one side seem heavy while the rest of the room has nothing to anchor it down.
Making your House Feel Balanced by Looking at the Bones of Your Room
The first step to avoid unbalance is to look at the bones of the room. Where are your windows in proximity to the fireplace (if there is one)? Does your room have large built-ins? Are there any other features built into the room to consider? If you’re working on a focal feature like a fireplace or large shelf built-ins, you will need to put a large furniture item opposite of the feature. Depending on the size and location of windows, they can contribute to the balance of the room or sometimes need some furniture by them to help with balance.
Making your House Feel Balanced – Avoid Filling Every Corner
It can be easy but a big mistake to find yourself filling every corner in the room in an attempt to create balance. I would recommend starting from scratch. Move everything out of the room (if possible, at least all the small moveable items) and try the “less is more” idea. Slowly add pieces to create balance without overcrowding.
Finding room balance takes several mistakes before finding the right configuration. Remember that floor lamps, table lamps, and small tables are inexpensive items that can help you create balance. In fact, it usually doesn’t require MORE furniture, but de-cluttering what you already have. If you feel like room balance is not something you are interested in figuring out yourself but would really like to achieve, I’d be happy to help you!
