Mothers! The title of Mother is a complex title. It not only describes the ones who carry and nurture a baby for 9 months, but one whose role evolves once that baby is placed in the mother’s loving arms. This title also includes joy, exhaustion, excitement, heartache, challenges, unconditional love and so much more. The days of being a mother are long and tiring, but the year’s speed by. It is quite a role we have in society and more importantly in our homes. For you mom’s out there who need a pat on the back and an uplifting message; this post is for you.
There are days that I feel overwhelmed with responsibilities as a mother. In the newborn days, my goal was to get the baby to sleep through the night and then I thought my life would be “back to normal”. Although sleep is always a wonderful thing to wish for, I find that I am still up at night sometimes thinking about the welfare of my children even though they are sleeping through the night. The older they get, the more I worry and find myself longing for those newborn days when sleep was my only concern.
Jeffery R. Holland, an author, and speaker, summed up the work of mother’s perfectly in his 1997 article called Because She Is A Mother. He stated, “The work of a mother is hard, too often unheralded work. With night feedings and night teethings, often the greatest challenge of all for a young mother is simply fatigue. Through these years, mothers go longer on less sleep and give more to others with less personal renewal for themselves than any other group I know at any other time in life. It is not surprising when the shadows under their eyes sometimes vaguely resemble the state of Rhode Island.”
“Do the best you can through these years, but whatever else you do, cherish that role that is so uniquely yours and for which heaven itself sends angels to watch over you and your little ones.”
Celebrate Mothers
What a beautiful reminder of our unique role as mothers. Hence, nothing can replace us. Sometimes we really have to seek for the joy of it especially when the days and nights are long because of a newborn or an older child who is struggling. Please know that the effort put into being a mother is completely worth it. The time, patience, love, discipline and support we invest in our children today will pay off. Finding joy in motherhood, even on those tough days, will not only bless your children, it will also keep you focused on your greatest role, a mother.
