Organize Clutter
You know you have that “closet”. We all have at one time. I call these closets, Narnia closets. Every time you open the door, you find everything you aren’t looking for. It’s the game/coat/shoe/vacuum/toilet paper/single winter glove closet. Back in the backwoods of the mid-1700’s, this would have been ok to cram everything in one space since most homes were short on storage. It’s 2017. Let’s give up the Narnia closet and organize clutter and give that space a purpose.
What do I mean by purpose? Ideally, if you think, “I would like to play Monopoly with my family…”, you should be able to go directly to the game storage area of your home and get the game. Rather for most, the thought rarely crosses our minds because we wouldn’t even know where to begin the search. And if we made the fatal decision to look for the game, we would end up rummaging through all the game boxes to find all the metal pieces of Monopoly.
When we assign every part of our home with a purpose, it’s like we are having our home serve us. Often, we blame the lack of storage or a ridiculous layout on our “lost item” woes, but the truth is, we are to blame for not using our home in a way that it works for us.
Begin
By analyzing every closet, junk drawer, a messy corner in your home and watch how your family uses it. Is there a space they are more likely to drop their shoes? Does the mail always end up in a certain part of the home? Is there a corner you are afraid to even go near because of the organize clutter dilemma?
Next
Designate spots of the home for a specific function based on your family’s needs. I’ve realized it’s a lot easier to try and work with your family’s habits rather than trying to train them to do something totally different. Of course, though, this needs to be done within reason and with your sanity in the forefront. If you absolutely hate where your kids drop their “stuff” after school, it might be worth re-training.
Finally
Be aware you may need to declutter. To create a purpose for each space, some stuff may need to go. Ridding ourselves of things we don’t use, will create more productive space for those items we need.
As much fun as the Narnia closet can be and all the random items we find in there, it’s not working to its best potential. Allow yourself to imagine the moment you think of an item and go to the area that item should be located and it’s there! This dream is not beyond your reach. It is attainable. It’s also a great way to help home life run smoother and when home runs smoothly, it only adds to the happiness in the home. Now off you go to organize clutter and give that space a purpose!
