Are you in need of a beautiful home office?
A few years ago, my brother and his sweet wife built a beautiful, custom, farmhouse style home with all the bells and whistles. Real hardwood floors throughout, farmhouse sink, wood burning fireplace and the list goes on and on. They furnished the main family area but with a baby added into the mix, it stopped there.
They will tell you they always talked about finishing the other rooms but then life interfered, another baby came along and the rooms sat empty. To put it simply, they didn’t know where to start.
Then the decorator in me came out and I knew it was time to create a beautiful home office.
It probably appeared less “decorator” to them and more along the lines of an annoying fly at a picnic. I wouldn’t stop pestering them about the importance of decorating a home to enjoy for themselves, which in return will also help them sell in the future. They graciously went along with it and humored me. We took care of the big picture design while I was there on a visit…. 2 hours before leaving. The rest of the details were taken care of via phone calls, texts, and pictures.
The Big Picture
The goal was to use what they already owned and then decide what needed to be bought. Luckily, they only purchase good quality furniture and happened to have some great starting pieces. I want to focus on a room we turned from vacant room to a stellar beautiful home office.
Their family room area, in another part of the house, has a separate morning room from the kitchen with a large farmhouse table my brother built. It fills the need for a true dining room, so we decided to turn the “official” dining room, into an office to drool over.
Getting Started
Knowing their style is a rustic farmhouse and that’s where my heart is, it was easy for me to see the vision for this room. They happened to have an antique table sitting empty in another room that they weren’t quite sure what to do with. I decided this should be the new desk.
Every room needs varying height, so I showed them some bookshelves that would complement the desk and help fill the room. Since the room is a rectangle shape and the desk/shelves, were on one end, there needed to be a balance.
With the help of a rug, chair and side table, we could balance the weight of the room. Using a rug in a room this large with hardwood floors is a great way to bring softness to the room. It made an intimate area in a dominantly rustic vibe. That’s the beauty of mixing textures! It appeals to our different senses.
When everything was said, and done, they purchased 2 bookshelves, the rug, pulley hanging on the wall behind the chair and a huge clock on a wall not pictured. The rest of the items were already in the home. For most of us, our home’s potential can be met with what we already have. Sometimes it just takes some fresh eyes to see it.
